In 2025, JLTLA Foundation Is Proud to Announce a New Scholarship in Rhonda Hunter’s Name


The Rhonda Hunter Scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding law student, that is from (born and/or raised) the state of Texas and is attending law school in the DFW Metroplex. The student should display demonstrated leadership qualities and have a bold and brave record of commitment to community service.


The Honorable Rhonda Hunter of Dallas, a former district court judge, now serves as a trial consultant and mediator. In 2004, Hunter made history as the first African-American to serve as President of the Dallas Bar Association. She has also served as President of the J. L. Turner Legal Association, the Dallas Association of Black Women Attorneys and the DBA Community Service Fund. Additionally, she is past Chair of the Child Protection Law Section of the State Bar of Texas and past Chair of the Committee for a Qualified Judiciary in Dallas.  Rhonda Hunter represents the Dallas Bar Association in the American Bar Association House of Delegates where she serves as Chair of the Racial and Ethnic Diversity Caucus. Hunter also serves on the ABA Standing Committee on CLE.  Hunter also was co-creator of the award-winning Dallas Minority Attorney Program (DMAP), that has provided mentoring, CLE and guidance to Dallas attorneys for many years.


Hunter is Board Certified in both Family Law and Child Welfare Law. She currently serves as Chair of the Dallas County Child Welfare Board. Hunter is a former chief of the Juvenile Division of the District Attorney’s Office in Dallas and is on the ABA Juvenile Justice Standards Task Force charged with rewriting the nation's Juvenile Justice Standards.  


In her four decades as a lawyer, many in the private practice of law, Hunter served as choreographer and Assistant Director of the Bar None musical variety show which raised over 2 million dollars and funded the Sarah T. Hughes Diversity Scholarship for over 70 law students.
