"I started law school in August 2011 working a full-time job during the day and attending evening classes at SMU Dedman School of Law by night. Between managing a busy course load, work duties and my responsibilities as a wife and mother of two young kids, the strain quickly became too much for me to sustain. By the end of my first semester, I left my job to better focus on my studies. With said job went one-third of my family’s household income.
Enter the J.L. Turner Legal Association. A few weeks into law school, I attended the annual banquet and scholarship gala. Two pivotal things occurred: I saw the depth, breadth and power of Dallas’ Black legal community for the first time and I saw some of my friends accept scholarships from the association. I knew one day, I would join the ranks, in both regards.
So, I applied for a scholarship the next year, and the next year and the next. I am proud to say I am a two-time recipient of the J.L. Turner Legal Association Scholarship (2012-13 and 2013-14) and a one-time recipient of the Financial Need Scholarship (2014). Each year, the scholarship monies helped fill in some financial gaps for me. The most recent scholarship was especially helpful during bar study last winter. For that, I am forever grateful."
Jade Mens earned her J.D. from the SMU Dedman School of Law in December 2014. She passed the February 2015 Texas Bar Exam and has worked as a Tarrant County Assistant Criminal District Attorney since June 2015.
The Foundation's signature event is an annual scholarship gala that has raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for law school scholarships.
